The Kelpie Bag
A Design rooted in Myth and Collaboration
At Staunch Industries, the Kelpie has long been part of our creative mythology our symbol of the untamed energy of the North Sea, the legendary water beast that bridges the real and imagined. As a studio, we developed the Kelpie pattern as an exploration of that power, fluidity, and folklore an identity rooted in our coastal heritage.
The Kelpie Bag project brought that design to life in physical form: an Everyday Carry bag, functional and durable, designed in Scotland and produced in collaboration with Sandstorm Kenya. The process combined our design language with their craftsmanship each bag made start to finish by one artisan, using sustainable materials and time honoured techniques.
Beyond the product, the project supports Sandstorm’s community initiative, The Opportunity Factory a space for creative learning, craft, and economic empowerment in Nairobi. The Kelpie Bag represents more than just an object it’s a reflection of shared values, cultural exchange, and design with meaning and impact.
